MBDA – EXOCET SM40

European defense manufacturing firm MBDA has presented a new submarine-launched anti-ship missile – named SM40 – with multiple advanced capabilities.

MBDA is going to present the new submarine-shaped missile, along with other new offerings, at the Euronaval 2024 event. The four-day event, beginning November 4, aims to showcase the latest innovations and prepare for the future of navies and administrations operating at sea.

MBDA states that the new SM40 missile, and other offerings, is aimed at making advanced systems that can overcome the changing demands of naval warfare.

The missile is part of the Deep Strike solutions that it is offering to European players to meet their needs.

The Exocet SM40 submarine-launched missile features a new seeker to operate in highly complex electronic warfare environments and a doubled range – compared to previous version – to ensure submarine self-protection, according to a press release by MBDA.Expand article logo

The earlier variant, called Exocet SM39, offered by MBDA had all weather capability, sea skimming flight. It uses solid propellant and has a high kill warhead. The SM39 has a range of 39 miles (50 km), which enables the submarines to remain out of enemy detection and weapon range.

The SM39 had a length of 15.3 feet (4.69 meter), and it has a weight of 1,444 pounds (655 kilograms). It could travel at high subsonic speeds – around Mach 0.8 or 250 miles per hour. The missile is in service with the French Navy and several other navies around the world.
