Havelsan unveils Barkan 3 unmanned ground vehicle

Turkish software developer Havelsan has unveiled its Barkan 3 unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) and an AI-enabled combat management system that a company executive says will eventually work in swarms of dozens of robots — on the ground and in the air.

“We have done so far, some field trials. We did the mixed swarm, now we just started with eight units,” Havelsan Vice President for International Business Development and Marketing Sevket Unal told Breaking Defense Thursday after the Barkan 3 was shown at the SAHA defense expo here. “But the future, it will be tens of units — smaller, faster, high[ly] efficient systems … swarming in the vehicle segment or the UAV.”

The Barkan 3 on display at Havelsan’s area at SAHA was equipped with a 12.7 mm weapon system, and front-driving and ground-facing cameras. The company says it has a maximum speed of 25 kmph (15.5 mph) and that it can operate for five hours at full load. The UGV is the latest member of the Barkan family, the first of which was inducted into the Turkish military in 2023.

Compared to its two Barkan predecesors, “the shift [with Barkan 3] becomes more visible [in] what defines the system is no longer only what it carries, but how effectively it responds to changing conditions in the field,” Havelsan’s official announcement said.

Meanwhile, the AI-enabled management system dubbed ADVENT-AI, was also on display. It is “designed as an AI-supported decision layer that supports operators in naval operations. The system analyzes high-volume operational data in real time. It helps detect patterns, filter critical information, and support faster decision-making,” Havelsan said in a statement.

Both systems displayed are part of Havelsan’s “digital troops” concept.

“Now we are integrating AI in our combat management systems. We are integrating AI in our digital troops concept,” Unal said.

That mean, according to Unal, “joint swarming” capabilities that involve unmanned systems in multiple domains.

“The joint swarming means swarming between the UAV and the unmanned ground vehicle, or swarming between the UAV, and the USV [unmanned surface vessel]. We have been doing field trials, so we are improving our knowledge and increasing our competence in this area,” he said.

Unal added that now the joint swarming between Barkan 3 and Havelsan’s UAVs including Baha and Bozbey “is ready for deployment” and could be fielded in 2026.

As it works, Unal said Havelsan is keeping its number one customer in mind.

“We continuously work very closely with our armed forces, the Turkish Armed Forces. When we develop something, we develop it together with them, because in the end, they are the end users,” he told Breaking Defense.

But that doesn’t mean Havelsan isn’t courting customers further from home Unal said that Havelsan has ongoing projects in the Asia Pacific, Middle East and Europe.

“We are very active in all the Gulf countries, like Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain. We are having some discussions [with] our neighbors, Iraq and Syria, in the Mediterranean, North Africa, like Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco and many, many countries,” he said.

He added that Havelsan plans to open its office in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia within two months. After that, Havelsan could expand its offices to Kuwait as well.

“Opening an office means that you will settle there, not only for business developments, but also for enforcing and supporting the local employment, technology transfer, competence, settling inside the country,” he said.
